On November 17th, anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, based on the Scott Pilgrim comic book series, premiered.^[1] In the first episode of the anime, Scott Pilgrim approaches character Ramona Flowers at a party and strikes a conversation with her, opening by telling her a factoid about Sonic the Hedgehog (still image shown below).

You know Sonic the Hedgehog? You probably know this, but in the early 90s, there were two different Sonic cartoons airing at the same time. One was dark and dramatic. The other was a hilarious comedy about chili dogs. And the same guy played Sonic in both shows. Isn't that wild? The same guy playing two different versions of the same guy?

On November 18th, 2023, X^[2] user @milomorales9 posted the earliest found meme based on the scene, dubbing the clip over with a speech about Sonic Frontiers. The video (shown below) received over 80 reposts and 600 likes in two days.

Spread

Starting on November 18th, the scene saw spread on X / Twitter as a meme format, with users captioning still images with references to various media franchises and memes. For example, on that day user @NoponDigi posted a version about Xenoblade Chronicles that received over 770 reposts and 4,900 likes on X^[3] in two days (shown below, left). Later that day, user @M1das_OW2 used the format for a meme about Skibidi Toilet that gained over 2,600 reposts and 27,000 likes in the same period (shown below, right).^[4]

The format saw more use in the following days, with users sometimes utilizing it to share obscure facts about various media franchises.
