About
ShortBloom's Mii Gunner Combo Video, known colloquially as the Racist Mii Gunner video, refers to a viral video in which Super Smash Brothers Ultimate player and Mii Gunner main ShortBloom responded to backlash for his use of the N word with a gameplay video showing off his combos, interspersed with over-the-top edgy justifications for his actions. The video went on to become a niche joke in the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate community, as people mocked ShortBloom's gameplay and dialogue.
Origin
On September 21st, 2020, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate player ShortBloom[1] posted a video justifying his use of the N-word, accompanied by some of his Mii Gunner gameplay. Notable moments include him writing, "To those who wonder why I did this, the answer is simple… I worship no God!" before the video cuts to several minutes of his Mii Gunner clips. Towards the end of the video, he switches from clips showing his character walking around a custom stage while text laid out his more detailed defenses, comparing those who criticized him for using the N-word to the Catholic Church's treatment of non-believers. The original video was deleted but was reuploaded by YouTuber Trogdorbad on October 10th, 2020 (shown below).
Spread
Though ShortBloom was a relatively minor Smash player, his video began spreading through Twitter roughly a month after it was posted. On October 8th, 2020 Twitter user @GsFlint[2] posted about it, gaining over 70 retweets and 670 likes in two years (shown below, left). Many joked about how his response to a racism controversy was to make a combo video. On October 8th, Redditor @abeflorida[3] posted a parody thumbnail of Shortbloom, gaining over 60 retweets and 540 likes (shown below, right).
On June 21st, 2021, Shortbloom posted another video, this one a 30-minute argument defending his use of the N-word. The video gained over 9,700 views in one year (shown below).
Memes about the video laid dormant until October 10th, 2022 when Twitter user @ProbablyJut[4] recalled it, gaining over 1,300 retweets and 18,000 likes (shown below, left). This led many to post jokes after remembering the video or discovering it for the first time. The Twitter account @makeupafgplayer[5] quote-tweeted @probablyjut's repost of the video, writing, "fighting game player who made a combo video in response to people calling him racist," gaining over 1,500 retweets and 14,000 likes (shown below, right).
