Overview

TwitLonger is a website that allows users to write text posts longer than 280 characters and post them to Twitter as a compressed link, essentially allowing users to post longer tweets. The website opened in 2008 and became increasingly popular throughout the 2010s and 2020s. It is often used by creators who find themselves in drama to share long-form allegations, clear up rumors and express themselves without worrying about Twitter's 280-character limit. In June 2022, Twitter announced their "Notes" feature, which will allow users to write longer note-style posts through the site, essentially offering an alternative to TwitLonger.

History

TwitLonger was created in November 2008. The @TwitLonger Twitter[1] account posted its first tweet on November 11th, 2008. On December 28th, Tag Edge[2] posted an article about TwitLonger, discussing its utility. On November 10th, 2009, YouTuber Jerry Gonzalez posted a video about the website, garnering over 9,500 views in 13 years (shown below).

In the years after it was founded, TwitLonger is largely used to address allegations and drama. On February 7th, 2011, rapper T-Pain posted a TwitLonger[3] where he threatened to leak his album early, citing frustrations with piracy and poor chart performance. On April 1st, 2013, David Hayter made a post to TwitLonger[4] addressing why he wouldn't be reprising his voice role of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V. On November 13th, singer Lily Allen used TwitLonger[5] to address accusations of racism.

On June 2nd, 2014, iCarly actress Jennette McCurdy posted a TwitLonger[6] about letting go of a "bad friendship" with a nameless person, where she airs out drama with who people believe is Ariana Grande (shown below).

Jennette McCurdy @jennettemccurdy 2nd Jun 2014 from TwitLonger Tweet @itsamccurdian. I actually wrote something about the topic of fake friends a while back but it was never published! Here it is, my dear... Letting Go of Someone 74 Like The title of this article sounds like I'm writing about coping with the death of a loved one. Rest assured, it won't be that morbid. Sorry I'm bad at naming things... This article is about knowing when to let go of a bad "friendship." There seem to be a lot of articles floating around the web right now that provide tips for ditching this ambiguous "trouble friend", so I wanted to provide my take on the matter, with a very personal example. I had this "friend". We had fun together in the first few months of our friendship. We ate at cool restaurants that she wanted to eat at, went to fun amusement parks and rode the rides she wanted to ride, and had sleepovers every couple of weeks where we would watch movies she wanted to watch. I enjoyed her company because she was fun and energetic, but I had some reservations about how much I could trust her because she seemed to be a leech for drama and gossip. I decided the good outweighed the bad, so I continued hanging out with her for a few months until our friendship slowly fizzled out. Fast forward to a year or so later and we were back on the map as friends. Not those first tier friends who tell each other everything and who would jump in front of a bus for each other, but solid second tier friends I would say. I'm not even sure how we fell back into being friends. It just sort of... happened. Before I know it, we were back to hanging out... doing exactly what this girl wanted to do. I felt like every time I hung out with her I was in quicksand. Being around her took my identity because everything in her world became just that... "Her world". It was really starting to bug me. I took a step back and was met with questions from her end: "Why aren't we better friends?" "What happened to our friendship?" "Where did you go?" "Did I do something wrong?" Well, (insert name here), here are the answers to your questions... We aren't better friends because being friends with you takes the "better" out of me. In fact, I might possibly be the worst version of myself when I'm around you. As for what happened to our friendship, it t I once through happenstance and it is happening this through my stance. I'm standing up for myself. I'm not playing your games, letting you manipulate me, and succumbing to your twisted perception of reality. Where did I go? As far away from you as I can get. You won't be hearing from me anymore because sweetheart, being a friend to you was doing so much more for you than it was doing for me. You sucked the life right out of me, and I want my life back. Did you do something wrong? Yes and no. I'm not sure whether you intentionally did something wrong or not, because I have always been a little unclear on what exactly your intentions are. But you did do something wrong in the way you did not treat me right. You disrespected me, disregarded me, and made me feel small by having to always make yourself seem so big. So for these sincere reasons, I am officially dropping you as a friend. If I see you, I won't turn the other way and run (even though I want to). Instead, I'll just smile and end the conversation as quickly as possible, because no offense, but I don't want any of you rubbing off on me. Actually, that's pretty offensive. Oh well. In January 2021, Dream published a TwitLonger[7] dealing doxxing attempts against him. In July of that year, Twitch streamer Adrianah Lee posted a TwitLonger[8] exposing streamer CrazySlick for sexual harassment. On August 31st, streamer Momo accused Arcadum of grooming through TwitLonger.[9] In October, Twitch streamers Edison Park and Leslie Fu announced their break-up in two separate TwitLonger[10][11] posts (shown below, left and right).

Edison Park @edisonparklive 13th Oct 2021 from TwitLonger . About me and Leslie Tweet -Edison 22 Like It breaks my heart to type this out but Leslie and I are separating (and have been separated for a month now). Leslie and I shared the most incredible journey together over the last 5.5 years together and I wouldn't trade that time for anything. With that said, please please respect our privacy and understand that although this was not an easy decision to come to, we both feel that it's for the best and have nothing but love for each other. No one did anything wrong; sometimes you just grow apart and that's life. I still love Leslie very much; if anything, it's because I love her that I feel this is for the best. To everyone who's been with us in our journey: thank you. You've all been nothing but amazing and supportive and it's meant the absolute world to us  Reply A Report Post
fuslie leslie @fuslie 13th Oct 2021 from TwitLonger Me and Edison. Tweet 48 Like I don't really know how to say this except just how it is - Edison and I broke up. We've been broken up for about a month now, but I didn't announce it right away because we weren't 100% sure about it. It doesn't feel real even as I'm typing this and it breaks my heart knowing you all are going to read this. I've been taking more time off than usual because of the breakup and not knowing when the best time to break the news to you all would be, but it's been way too hard pretending we're still together when we're not, ya know? - Leslie We ended on the best terms that I think we possibly could, and we genuinely want nothing but the best for each other. Please respect his and my privacy about this, and don't bother us about details or question us about why. Just know we love each other very much, but ultimately grew apart to the point where we both agree breaking up is what's best for both of us. Thank you so much to everyone who's been a part of our journey and shared in our love together. I know so many people saw our engagement clip and it touched so many of you and despite breaking up, that moment will always be so incredibly special to me, as to Edison. The past 5 1/2 years with him have been so incredible and I wouldn't be where I am today without him by my side. Send him only love please You'll still be seeing us gaming together in the future P.S. Might be taking some time off, but also might be streaming to distract myself so I'll probably see y'all soon. Reply A Report Post

On June 22nd, 2022, Twitter announced that they would start testing a "Notes" feature on Twitter that would essentially be an alternative to TwitLonger.[12] On September 21st, streamer toxxxicsupport shared an uncomfortable experience regarding JustaMinx on TwitLonger.[13] On the same day, Mizkif posted a TwitLonger[14] apologizing for allegedly covering up Adrianah Lee's sexual assault. On October 15th, Dream posted another TwitLonger[15] addressing grooming allegations against him. That same day, Kdin Jenzen posted a TwitLonger[16] exposing Rooster Teeth of workplace misconduct.

DREAM @dreamsecretclub 15th Oct 2022 from TwitLonger y Tweet 94 Like I'm sorry for the late post and reply I'm sorry for the late post and reply. I know it has been overwhelming and that the uncertainty is horrible in situations like this. I have been in a ton of scheduled meetings for the first time in my life this week, and have had so little time to check the internet that I actually excused myself to use the bathroom during a meeting to check what was happening online. But I'm trying to write this post before my fight to get truthful information out there. I'm going to be extremely specific and straightforward as it's a sensitive topic that I am taking seriously, and clarify on what's true and what isnt. The best thing I can do, and what I want to do, is always be 100% transparent when it comes to something as important as this. Yesterday, a thread was posted that had screenshots of twitter dms from me from 2020. I believe these dms are real. in these ns, there inappropriate comments whatsoever. It was just friendly conversation. In these screenshots, them being 18 years old is mentioned in their bio, and I also very clearly asked them for their age. I did not act inappropriately with this person, and any attempt to equate these messages to grooming is not only disgusting but is insulting to victims who actually experienced grooming and still have trauma as a result. Part of this thread includes cringey flirt text messages (again, when they were 18) that were supposedly from me, because it says that it is from their contacts when they go to my tiktok. this is impossible since I use a google voice number on my tiktok account which doesn't have the ability to iMessage. The other information is false, and this has unfortunately blown up into something that it simply isnt. Regardless, she was 18 years old and had 18 publicly available in her twitter bio. The second thread had instagram dms from me, again, having friendly normal conversation and nothing inappropriate. I believe these messages are real as well. Once again, she was 18 years old, says she was 18 years old, and even had a boyfriend while she was friendly with me. This being warped into me being a groomer and the fact that she is and was 18 is scary and sad, and a huge reason as to why it is so hard to interact one on one with anybody online as a creator, especially people from within your communities. I did not engage inappropriately with her, and anything saying otherwise is completely false. As far as I have seen, she was involved with leaktwt, and so was the first poster's boyfriend, which seems to be a trend in situations like these. But it's mostly been contained to their side of the internet other than during big moments (like the face reveal, or major streams / events). Having such a deep obsession towards someone to look deeply into their family, friends, and personal life, or making up relationships or friendships in your head is one of the biggest reasons parasocial relationships can become so dangerous. It's also one of the reasons why creators need to be as responsible as they can be and be careful when they interact with anybody. I have always done my absolute best to make sure that no one is ever uncomfortable with the way that I treat them, publicly or privately, and make an effort to make amends if I ever do something that someone doesn't like. I have also always made sure to have someone else have access to my public snapchat, and in 2020 had them completely run the account while sending me art and cool messages before discontinuing it for a while. As for why I think this is happening now, I recently made the decision to not use my old snapchat, and to make a new snapchat that I only have the people that I am actually friends with and actively talk to on, and this seems to have potentially struck a chord with people that I just casually talked with, for not talking to them anymore. One of the reasons I made this decision is because someone I knew when I was first making content completely lied about how close we were, and used friendly dms to tie into their unhealthy fantasy. I have almost completely stopped replying to dms from fans, random people, and old friends, due to situations like this and out of fear from stuff that has happened in the past to my friends and those close to me. My team has had access to my social accounts from as long as I could remember, in an effort to always stay on the side of caution given the size of my platform and inevitable, falsely spread, situations like this. This has all become so much more real and scary now that my face is out there for people to see, and I needed to address this all. I will also based on your advice pursue legal action towards people using my name to spread disinformation or those that are misrepresenting facts, lying, faking things, or falsely abusing my name and image. My heart goes out to actual victims of p--------- and grooming, and again, I'm extremely sorry that it took as long as it did for me to reply. I wanted to make sure I included everything. This is all of the information I have, but like past situations involving me, I know people are going to run with whatever fits their narrative best. If this isn't enough, at least we are on the same level of knowing. I hope everyone gets some rest, and tries to step back from everything as it can all be super overwhelming. That is definitely what I need to do, and I need to sleep for the first time in 10 days. It was amazing meeting so many of you at Twitchcon and I'm trying my best to stay positive.
