Slavic Couples Be Like refers to a series of memes parodying the perceived mismatch in attractiveness of females and males in couples from Slavic and other Eastern European countries. Spawned by a viral 2021 Facebook post, the image caption format achieved popularity on social media in the following years.

Origin

On February 12th, 2021, Instagram^[1] page agirlsaid posted a image of a Bratz doll standing next to Shrek captioned, "overly dressed gf and casual-wear bf." The post (shown below, left) received over 8,000 likes in two years. On February 22nd, 2021, Facebook^[2] page No Slav No Party posted the image, captioning it, "Slavic couples be like:" The post (shown below, right) gained over 1,100 reactions and 120 shares in two years.

Spread

Starting in June 2023, a re-edit of the meme was widely circulated online (shown below), with reposts on Facebook and other sites going viral. For example, a June 10th, 2021, post by 9GAG^[3] user auxiilium garnered over 10,000 upvotes on the site in two years. A June 14th, 2021, post by Facebook^[4] page Dank Meme received over 3,000 reactions and 350 shares in two years.

The viral spread of the meme inspired reuse of the caption with other fitting images in the following years. For example, prior to February 10th, 2022, X / Twitter user @civanakgun used the caption with a photograph of a woman sitting next to a statue of Patrick from SpongeBob SquarePants (post no longer available; shown below, left). On February 10th, iFunny^[5] user 2huRespecter shared the image, with the post being featured and gaining over 107,600 likes in one year. On July 22nd, 2023, X^[6] / Twitter user @vqslvv posted a Barbenheimer meme that received over 190 reposts and 2,500 likes in three months (shown below, right).
