Small Battlefield refers to a surprise stage added to Super Smash Brothers Ultimate as part of the 8.1 patch. The stage uses the same aesthetic assets of the game's "Battlefield" and "Big Battlefield" stage. However, unlike "Battlefield," which features a long base platform with three smaller platforms above it, "Small Battlefield" features a smaller base platform with two smaller platforms. After the surprise reveal of the stage, the Smash community made numerous jokes and humorous photoshops.

Origin

On August 4th, 2020, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate received its 8.1 patch, which added the stage "Small Battlefield" (shown below). According to the game developer Masahiro Sakurai, "When fighting 1 on 1, Battlefield feels a bit wide, and Final Destination feels like it's lacking. So we came up with a middle option with two platforms."^[1]

Spread

The surprise addition quickly led to numerous jokes. For example, Twitter user @MarioIsBroken^[2] posted a Mii with small eyes, resembling the Small Battlefield stage, gaining over 270 retweets and 2,700 likes (shown below, left). User @JFreshSplat^[3] posted a Stage Creator parody which showed multiple Battlefield stages in the Battlefield form, gaining over 2,100 retweets and 19,000 likes (shown below, right).

Others posted video jokes about the new stage. For example, user @the_chocolope posted a video of a rapper singing "I took the top off," gaining over 240 retweets and 1,900 likes (shown below, top). User @AceStarThe3rd posted a video in which boys are laughing at a small snake, gaining over 720 retweets and 3,400 likes (shown below, bottom). Jokes were covered by Polygon.^[4]
