Sometimes Like This / Also Like That is a line associated with a kind of sexually connoted fan art in which a character is depicted in two situations: one where they are hugging someone or being hugged from the front; and another where they are sexually penetrated from behind – the crudest details usually hidden by the panel's framing. The hugged character and the penetrated one share the same position. This art trend was mostly seen on Twitter during 2023.

History

The artwork that inspired this trend seems to be a drawing by RaikageArt, posted on Twitter^[1] on February 14th, 2023. This 2-panel fanart represents Naruto character Hyuuga Hinata, hugged by Naruto on the left, and seemingly having sex on the spoons position with Raikage on the right.

Fellow artist Art of Neight copied this model, and posted on Twitter^[2] and Facebook^[3] on March 20th, 2023 a re-creation of Raikage's drawing, featuring Attack On Titan characters Eren Yaeger and Misaka Ackerman, with the perspective flipped: in this version, Eren is hugged by Misaka on the right, and seemingly pegged by Misaka on the left. This piece was titled "Sometimes like this | But also like this", which eventually led to the consensual name of the meme. The Facebook post gained over 6,000 reactions and was shared over 700 times in 2 years.

Right after Art Of Neigh's post, many online smut artists, mainly on Twitter, have been inspired to draw a similar kind of fanart, usually featuring fictional characters that they ship together. Those artworks are most often titled or captioned in regard to the switch between the two situations, the most common lines being "Sometimes like this / Also like that" and "Day / Night". Among the most popular artworks born from this meme, a Trigun fanart posted on Twitter^[4] by KAYZ on March 22nd, 2023, gathered over 14,600 likes and 2,600 retweets in 2 years.
