About

A Fox in Space is an online animated series on YouTube based on the Nintendo IP Star Fox created by animator Matthew Gafford. The show is animated in the style of an 80s American Saturday morning cartoon complete with VHS filter. It features adult language and themes. The first episode premiered in 2016 and due to the fact that Gafford does the vast majority of all the animation along voicing some of the characters, it takes a great period of time to release new episodes. As of February 2020, there has only been one episode of the show, and Gafford has periodically released clips of Episode 2. Despite this, the series still has a close online following.

History

A Fox In Space was in development as early as November 2014. On November 8th, the A Fox In Space Tumblr[1] account launched, with Gafford initially advertising a project dubbed Star Fox: The Animated Series (shown below). It was later changed to A Fox In Space for copyright reasons.

STAR FOX THE ANIMATED SERIES

In February of 2015, Matthew Gafford launched a Patreon for the series.[2] On April 25th, 2016, the first and so far only episode of A Fox In Space debuted, gaining over 2.7 million views (shown below).

Over the following four years, Gafford has released clips of the second episode's progress (examples shown below).

Online Presence

Despite only having one official episode, the series has generated a passionate following. Gafford's Patreon account makes $3,000 per month. The YouTube channel for the series has over 128,000 subscribers.[3] On Twitter, the show has over 14,000 followers.[5] There is also a page for the series on TV Tropes.[4]

The show was also widely praised upon the release of episode 1, receiving positive reviews from ArsTechnica,[6] Games Radar,[7] and AV Club.[8]
