About

Kung Fu Panda 4 refers to the fourth installment of the Kung Fu Panda franchise. In the film, Po will face off against a shape-shifting Chameleon antagonist, who can shapeshift into previous series antagonists, while also finding a successor to the title of Dragon Warrior.

History

On December 13th, 2023, the trailer for the film was posted by the official Universal Pictures[1] YouTube Channel, where it quickly gained over 5.4 million views in eight hours (shown below).

Online Presence

After the trailer's reveal, fans began to speculate further on the story and the franchise on social media. Due to the lack of Po's backup Karate masters, the Furious Five, in the trailer, fans were quick to voice their displeasure at what they perceived to be the Furious Five being left out of the movie entirely, as seen in the X post by @contempered[2] on December 13th, 2023 (shown below).

Other fans of the series were less than thrilled that Awkwafina was in yet another children's movie, showing fatigue with this being her fifth children's voice acting role in five years. This sentiment is summed up in the X post by @Klassyarts[3], who used a .gif of Pam from The Office facepalming to show their apathy towards her inclusion in the film (shown below).

This can go one of two ways:

1. The Shrek 4 route, where the more serious story managed to pick up the slack of the subpar third one.

2. The Toy Story 4 route, where it just feels like a tacked-on cash-grab to awkwardly associate itself with a more-or-less perfect trilogy.
