*Takes a Deep Breath* is a series of mock conversations based on a copypasta in which the speaker, assuming the role of the poster, is preemptively interrupted by the listener who readily goes on to scold the former’s obsession with a particular subject or franchise in popular culture.

Origin

On July 21st, 2015, Tumblr user sugaawaras^[1] published a mock conversation in which he is chastised by a friend for repeatedly expressing his love for the character Sugawara Koushi from the anime series Haikyuu (shown below). Within three weeks, the post gathered upwards of 2,200 notes.

Spread

On August 10th, Tumblr user xtrmeosaurus-rex^[3] published a version of the conversation substituting the cryptid creature Mothman for Sugawara Koushi, garnering more than 3,000 notes in the first month (shown below).

On August 31st , Tumblr user kiohne^[4] posted a variation of the template substituting Nicki Minaj for the object of the user's affection (shown below).

On September 5th, 2015, Meme Documentation^[2] published an explanation of the conversation posts. On September 9th, Tumblr user sardanax^[5] published a mock conversation in which he is scolded for expressing his appreciation for the linguistics (shown below).

As of September 10th, a search query for "takes a deep breath"^[6] yields more than 400 instances of the copypasta on Tumblr.
