Uh, Meow? is a quote from the Sonic the Hedgehog trailer. In the trailer, when Sonic is discovered by James Marsden's character, he attempts to pretend to be a cat before the two characters scream at each other. The moment became one of the most infamous scenes in the trailer, and was mocked in viral clips of audiences seeing the trailer ahead of Pokémon Detective Pikachu and remixed online.

Origin

On April 30th, 2019, the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released. In the trailer, Sonic and James Marsden's character meet, and Sonic attempts to act like a cat by saying "Uh… meow?" before the two characters scream at each other.


Precursor

In 2008, Cheezburger [4] user arden19 posted a photograph of a raccoon near a pet-food bowl (shown below). The post is captioned, "Um, meow?"

The moment was a quick source of parody in CGI Sonic Edits on Twitter. Artist LilMissAnimator posted fan art of the moment the day after the trailer's release (shown below, left).[1] User @YellowMatsumoto[2] did the same on May 9th, gaining over 230 retweets and 1,300 likes (shown below, right).

On May 10th, Twitter user @Geeky_Girl75 posted video of a theater audience watching the trailer ahead of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu saying the line along with Sonic and howling in laughter, gaining over 36,000 retweets and 120,000 likes (shown below). This was covered in an article by Nintendo Soup.[3]



On YouTube, the moment was parodied in multiple remix videos. For example, user Garry Garrison posted a Content Aware Scaling edit of the scene, gaining over 11,000 views (shown below, left). User Nanashi posted a Bart, I Don't Want to Alarm You edit of the scene, gaining over 1,000 views (shown below, right).
