Fluffy Sonic is the name given to Sonic the Hedgehog in the 2020 film adaptation during a scene in which Sonic shakes out his wet hair. The character was introduced in a January 2020 trailer and was met with fan art on Twitter, DeviantArt and Reddit.
Origin
On January 23rd, 2020, a trailer featuring a short clip of Sonic with fluffy hair was released and the full scene was released two days later (shown below). The Filmspot trailer received over 4.1 million views on YouTube in a month.
Spread
On January 23rd, 2020, Twitter user @AfterLi51707799[1] responded to the trailer by posting side-by-side images of Sonic and a small dog with the caption "I see no difference #SonicMovie" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 2,400 likes in a month. That same day, Redditor SuperSonicGamer1103 posted a screenshot of sonic calling him Fluffy Sonic to r/SonicTheHedgehog[2] (shown below, right). The post accumulated over 1,200 points (98% upvoted) in a month.
Following the movie's release, many viewers continued to comment on Fluffy Sonic. On February 19th, 2020, Redditor Oreo_The_Dino posted the image using Fluffy Sonic's line "This is entirely your fault" to r/memes[3] and received over 64,600 points (94% upvoted) in a week (shown below, left). On February 21st, Twitter user @ladyegcake[4] posted Fluffy Sonic fan art and gained over 220 likes in five days (shown below, right).
