About

Vladimir Lenin Addressing Crowd is an image macro based on a painting by Vladimir Serov.

Origin

In 1947, Vladimir Serov painted "Lenin proclaims Soviet power in Smolny Palace, Petrograd, 1917" (shown below).[1]

On April 16th, 2016, the website Me.me [2] scraped the earliest known version of the meme from a since-deleted Facebook post (shown below).

Lenin, why is it so important to you that we have a revolution now? BECAUSE IT IS 1917

Spread

On April 9th, 2019, Redditor [3] DemonicMonkeyMan posted the image with the mock quote attributed to Lenin: "The Bolshevik revolution is not complete until every person on this college campus is forced to use our designated gender pronouns." The post received more than 235 points (98% upvoted) in less than one year (shown below, left).

Months later, on August 7th, Redditor[4] Rick0wens posted the image with a speech bubble of Lenin saying, "Hi, I'm Vladimir Lenin. He / him. Point of privilege, please leave the room if you are wearing Axe body spray. The scent reminds some people of getting swirlies in high school and prevents them from feeling safe." Within six months, the post received more than 1,100 points (99% upvoted) and 70 comments (shown below, center).

On November 28th, Redditor[5] IbanPrau posted an object-labeled variation of the meme in which the crowd is labeled "my friends trying to give me their McDonalds order" and Lenin is labeled "me, the least drunk." The post received more than 48,000 points (97% upvoted) and 200 comments in less than one week (shown below, right).
