We're Emo!!!!! refers to a series of redraw memes based on a piece of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fan art depicting Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy as emos, Twilight Sparkle yelling, "we're emo!!!!!" The image was originally posted to Instagram in May 2022 and became the subject of redraws over the following months.

Origin

On May 9th, 2022, Instagram^[1] user zipkey.crunchy posted a low-definition piece of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fan art depicting Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy as emos, the former yelling, "we're emo!!!!!" garnering over 530 likes in a year (shown below).

On May 24th, X^[2] user @CHID0UINS posted a redraw of the meme, depicting the image in their own style, garnering over 3,100 likes in a year (shown below). This is the earliest known redraw of the meme.

Spread

On May 27th, YouTuber^[3] Makaryo posted an original animation based on the meme where emo Fluttershy and Twilight Sparkle badly sing various emo songs, garnering over 27,000 views in a year (shown below).

Redraws of the meme became increasingly popular on sites including Deviant Art, Tumblr and X over the following months. On May 31st, X^[4] user @FatBotDraws posted a redraw that gained over 4,800 likes in a year (shown below, left). On June 4th, Deviant Art^[5] user yesterdaysrunaway posted a redraw that gained over 100 favorites in a year (shown below, right).

On January 8th, 2023, Redditor u/JTTt281 posted an HD remake of the original meme to /r/mylittlepony,^[6] garnering around 35 upvotes in eight months. On April 4th, Deviant Art^[7] user Marenlicious posted a redraw that gained over 40,000 views and 700 favorites in five months (shown below).

On August 9th, Tumblr^[8] user swollenbabyfat posted a redraw of the meme that gained over 2,400 notes in a month (shown below).
