"What if Hatsune Miku was a Pokémon Trainer? refers to a fan art trend popular on Twitter that pairs the character Hatsune Miku alongside Pokémon, imagining her as a Pokémon trainer of a specific type.

Origin

On August 31st, 2023, the Twitter PokeMikuVOLTAGE account was created to promote a collaboration between the character Hatsune Miku and the Pokémon brand, called "Project VOLTAGE"^[1] (shown below, left). Four days later, the first image of the collaboration was released, imagining what would Miku look like if she were a Psychic type trainer, pairing her with Meloetta. The image gained 106,000 likes and 46,600 retweets in the following two weeks (shown below, right).

After the first pairing was revealed, multiple fan artists created their own "what if" pairings of Miku with different Pokémon. One of the earliest examples was created by Twitter/X artist jsketch12^[2] on September 6th, 2023, drawing Miku as a "Sound"-type trainer alongside their own Fakémon "Cicadrone." The post scored 14,700 likes and 1,645 retweets in the following week (shown below, left). On September 7th, artist RhymeWithRay^[3] used the Pokémon Toxtricity as Miku's partner, imagining her as an Electric-type trainer, obtaining 31,100 likes and 5,037 retweets in one week (shown below, right).

On September 9th, user Lilroundpumpkin^[4] paired Miku with the Pokémon Altaria, imagining her as a Flying-type trainer, obtaining 29,700 likes and 5,193 retweets in four days (shown below, left). On September 11th, user @SritaLactomeda^[5] tweeted an example imagining a Ghost-type trainer Miku with Litwick, gaining over 120 likes and 20 retweets in two days (shown below, right).
