The Your Phone Linging Ringtone, also known as the Yo Phone Linging Ringtone, refers to a ringtone of a man with a Chinese or Asian accent yelling at the phone's owner because their phone is ringing. While some perceived it as having racist connotations due to its association with Engrish, the ringtone trended in memes on TikTok in late 2023, where many users showed that they'd downloaded the ringtone and added it to their iPhones.

Origin

The original Your Phone Linging ringtone was created by the YouTube^[1] channel The Marimba Squad on August 1st, 2019, titled, "Phone Ringing – Funny Asian Ringtone." Over four years, the video received roughly 183,200 views and 4,200 likes (shown below).

Spread

Sometime on or before November 19th, 2023, a TikToker named @the_bread_delivery_man posted a screen recording that seemingly showed the ringtone downloaded on their phone. The video has since been deleted. However, a stitch with it was posted by TikToker^[2] @isme792amback on November 19th, gaining over 1,000 plays in two days (shown below, left). @the_bread_delivery_man's since-deleted video created a sound that was used by other TikTokers.^[3] However, the sound has also been removed from the platform.

On November 20th, 2023, TikToker^[4] @chalky_miner9 posted a similar screen recording, which gained over 3.5 million plays and 479,600 likes in one day (shown below, right).

Going into November 2023, the ringtone continued to amass viral video content, such as a stylized edit posted by TikToker^[5] @dxxave on November 20th, 2023, gaining over 666,300 plays and 88,400 likes in a day (shown below).

On November 20th, 2023, TikToker^[6] @mikeandbusinessfrieza posted a photo slideshow that included Offensive AI Pixar images about the ringtone's catchphrase and character, gaining over 419,500 likes in a day (recording shown below).
