About

Yui Yamada Rolling in Bed After a Phone Call refers to a series of GIF caption memes based on a GIF of anime character Yui Yamada rolling in bed happily after a phone call with a girl. The format has been used since 2019, gaining a significant burst in popularity with ironic use in August 2021.

Origin

On July 25th, 2017, Japanese yuri anime film Kimi no Hikari: Asagao to Kase-san. (jap. Your Light: Kase-san and Morning Glories) premiered. In one scene of the film, main character Yui Yamada gets off a phone call with her love interest Kase-san, gets happy and rolls in bed.

On July 21st, 2018, Tumblr[1] user tocif uploaded a sped-up version of the scene as GIF, with the post gaining over 43,300 likes and reblogs in three years (shown below).

Spread

The GIF initially gained popularity as a reaction in transgender community, primarily used in the /r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns subreddit. On April 29th, 2019, Redditor[2] traa-throwaway made the earliest post with using the GIF, gaining over 570 upvotes in the subreddit six months (shown below). On August 23rd, 2019, Redditor[3] ChloeIsEggcellent made a post that gained over 990 upvotes in six months.

Prior to February 22nd, 2021, an unknown user created a GIF caption based on the GIF, captioning it "When the discord mod calls you his little chungus" (shown below). On February 22nd, 2021, Tenor[4] user arlikas uploaded the GIF caption. The GIF caption received viral spread in the following months; for example, on March 9th, 2021, iFunny[5] user Larry reposted it, with the post gaining over 130 smiles in seven months. Viral spread of the post prompted further ironic use of the GIF in August 2021, when it gained popularity on iFunny in video captions, paired with "LOVERBOY" by A-Wall. The first post to pair the GIF and the song is currently unknown.

For example, on August 11th, 2021, iFunny[7][8] users Jubbles and Toosii posted a meme that gained over 140 smiles and 220 smiles in two months, respectively (shown below, left and right).

The format maintained its popularity on iFunny in mid-August, also spreading to meme communities on Reddit and to Instagram.
