Back in November 2021, Twitter user @Senn_Spud made a post suggesting it's silly for sports players to sign longterm contracts because "the fog" is coming to "consume us" in 2027. The tweet was screenshotted and gained viral spread across social media, kicking off a massive push of memes about the mysterious all-consuming fog.
Throughout 2022, the meme spread across Twitter, Instagram and TikTok as users made eerie videos and schizoposting memes repeating the mantra, "the fog is coming." Of course, there is no fog that's actually coming (at least, not that we know of), but that hasn't stopped it from turning into a huge meme.
How Is 'The Fog Is Coming' Used In Memes?
In memes, "the fog is coming" has become an ominous message and mantra. Without context, slapping the phrase into any video or image macro format brings to mind images of a terrifying fog washing over the world, kind of like in that Stephen King book The Mist. Often, the phrase is accompanied by some spooky imagery, or silly imagery turned spooky.
Some memers attach a date to the memes, suggesting that the fog is coming on that specific date. Most recently, some TikTokers are claiming that the fog is coming on May 15th, 2023 and making memes out of influencers saying "the fog is coming," like rap battle MrBeast and Midget Mafia. Others say it's coming in August. Looks like we'll just have to wait and see.
