About

"An Idiot Sandwich" refers to a scene in which Gordon Ramsey holds talk-show host Julie Chen's head between two slices of bread while yelling at her. The scene is frequently parodied with other characters in place of Ramsey and Chen.

Origin

The scene originates from the "Hell's Cafeteria" parody skit from episode 50 of The Late Late Show with James Cordon, which first aired April 26th, 2015. In the skit Gordon Ramsey holds Julie Chen's head between two slices of bread, then proceeds to ask her "What are you?" She then replies "An idiot sandwich." The scene was uploaded to YouTube the morning after it aired, where it has garnered more than 2 million views as of March 29th, 2016.



Spread

The scene was later posted to Vine by user Brady Barnhart on May 17th, 2015, accompanied by the words "When the teacher calls on you but you get the answer wrong". The video has since benn taken down. In addition, the video was later posted to tumblr by awesomevines where it gained over 40,000 notes.[1] On June 11th, 2015 Reddit user Yesyesyoar posted an image about Reddit funding accompanied by a gif of the scene titled "Don't pay the idiot sandwich!" to /r/fatwichwehate. The post has since gained over 170 likes in under a year.[2]

On March 13th, 2019, Gordon Ramsay appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The YouTube upload gained 282,900 views and 6,700 likes in two days (shown below). Corden and Ramsey discussed Ramsay's first appearance of the show and the meme that spawned from it. Ramsey share that he gets requests from fans to call them idiot sandwiches. Then, Ramsay announced that his Las Vegas restaurant would soon be selling "idiot sandwich earmuffs" which he then gifted to Corden on the show.
