About

Avenge the Fallen Poster Parodies refers to a series of photoshopped versions of promotional posters for the 2019 Marvel superhero film Avengers: Endgame. The original posters feature those who survived and those who perished at the end of the film's predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War. However, these online parodies showcase other seemingly forgotten or ignored characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, other famous deaths in popular culture or other fictional characters.

Origin

On March 26th, 2019, Marvel Entertainment released a series of promotional posters for the film Avengers: Endgame. Each of these posters featured the head of one character with the tagline "Avenge the Fallen." However, these posters were split into two categories: survivors of Infinity War, which are full-color posters, and "the fallen," or those who perished during Infinity War's finale, which are black and white posters.

That day, Marvel posted the images on Twitter [1] with the caption "1 Month. #AvengersEndgame." The initial post in the thread received more than 15,000 retweets and 42,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below).

Spread

Following the release of the posters, people began posting images of other fictional characters photoshopped to resemble and parody the promos. For example, Twitter[2] user @Nibellion tweeted an image of the Nintendo video game character Luigi. The post received more than 280 retweets and 1,800 likes in 24 hours (shown below).

Throughout the day, people continued to post photoshopped versions of the posters. Twitter[4] user @Jeff_Delgado tweeted a series of images of characters that died in Pixar films. The post received more than 1,000 retweets and 3,300 likes in 24 hours (shown below, center). Twitter[5] user @Bosslogic tweeted a variation with an image of Goose the Cat from the film Captain Marvel. The post received more than 14,000 retweets and 35,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below, right).

Several media outlets covered the meme, including Polygon,[6] Mashable, [7] Newsweek,[8] PopBuzz[9] and more.
