You Should X / X:, also known as X Is So Good / X:, You Gotta X / X:, You Should Play X It's So Good / The Gameplay:, or You Should Watch X It's So Good / X:, refers to a phrasal template that makes fun of video games, movies and TV shows using Hood Irony, Hood Lobotomy and Greenscreen Silhouette videos to show an ironically low-quality Hood Irony Dramatization of the game's gameplay or the show's plotline/episodes. The trend started with a meme about the anime One Piece in which a Pirate Irony video was labeled as episode 30 of One Piece. The trend spread across TikTok in early 2023, eventually spreading to Twitter, Instagram and iFunny, among other platforms. Eventually, continents and countries were also made fun of, resulting in so-called "Continent Irony." Many of the TikTok memes also used the He Was Running From A Cop Car sound effect.

Origin

On March 8th, 2023, TikToker^[1] @hoodmemes.john2024.v8 posted a video that used greenscreen silhouettes and the There Be Treasure sound effect to generate a Hood Irony video that built on the Casino Irony trend. The video received roughly 525,900 plays and 113,400 likes in one month. On March 29th, 2023, Twitter^[2] user @kickfliptomboys reposted the video, pairing it with the caption, "One piece fans: it has a slow star but you'll definitly be hooked by episode 30 / Episode 30:" Over the course of three weeks, the tweet gained roughly 4,800 likes (shown below).

Spread

Going into April 2023, Twitter^[2] user @kickfliptomboys' tweet was reposted to other platforms. For instance, on March 31st, 2023, TikToker^[3] @memequeefer1738 reposted the tweet as a video, gaining roughly 468,600 plays and 83,600 likes in three weeks. On April 4th, 2023, iFunnyer^[4] @ghoss reposted it, gaining roughly 11,800 smiles in 18 days.

Soon after, variants of the format started to emerge online. The first-known one was posted by TikToker^[5] @smo_ked on April 15th, 2023, namedropping the manga Berserk, claiming, "Berserk fans: you'll be hooked by chapter 20 trust me / chapter 20:" The video also used the Metal Pipe Falling Sound Effect. Over the course of six days, the video received roughly 651,300 plays and 151,500 likes (shown below). It was also reposted to Instagram^[6] two days later.

On April 18th, 2023, TikToker^[7] @empty_head_goofball uploaded an iteration about the video game franchise Fallout, gaining roughly 213,300 plays and 50,100 likes in three days (shown below, left). After the video's upload, more iterations about video games surfaced on TikTok. For instance, on April 19th, 2023, TikToker^[8] @knock_off_blahaj2 uploaded an iteration about Red Dead Redemption 2, gaining roughly 222,500 plays and 51,900 likes in two days (shown below, right).

Going into April 2023, many of the memes on TikTok became associated with the #hoodirony tag on TikTok.^[9]
