But It's a Danganronpa Trial refers to a genre of remix video popular on YouTube in which creators edit clips from various pieces of media to make them play out as though they were a trial from the Danganronpa series of video games.

Origin

The earliest known parody was posted by YouTuber EX Falchion on November 4th, 2016, using a clip from the first presidential debate in the 2016 United States Presidential Election. The video gained over 139,000 views (shown below).



Spread

On December 4th, 2016, YouTuber annika b uploaded a Bee Movie clip edited to play out like a scene from Danganronpa, gaining over 432,000 views (shown below). The meme did not begin spreading until the rise of Steamed Hams edits a year later. On December 16th, 2017, YouTuber Bmo Beemo posted a Steamed Hams edit cut to make the scene play out like a scene from Danganronpa. The video gained over 27,000 views (shown below).



On January 8th, 2018, YouTuber WhoaDoctorFreeman also made a Steamed Hams / Danganronpa edit, gaining over 343,000 views and helping popularize the style. The first few edits in the genre were also "Steamed Hams" edit. The first popular video to use a different piece of media was a Star Wars edit posted by Bill Wilson on April 11th, 2018, gaining over 7,300 views (shown below, right).

The genre continued to trend in 2019 after Tumblr[1] user kitkatronpa posted an edit pairing Danganronpa with a scene from Golden Girls on February 7th, gaining over 43,000 notes. The video was reuploaded to YouTube by user Gue st, gaining over 313,000 views (shown below, left). On November 28th, YouTuber the rocking goomba posted a video featuring Onision's Patreon breakdown, gaining over 211,000 views (shown below, right).
