About

Cats with Prosthetic Hands is a series of images of cats with small prosthetic human hands on its paws. The images have been used in a series of captioned image macros, which characterize the cats as a therapist.

Origin

On March 9th, 2017, Twitter [1] user @apricotbelly posted a series of images of a cat with prosthetic hands. The post received more than 249,000 likes and 154,000 retweets in less than three years (shown below).

Precursor

On May 27th, 2009, YouTuber Robert Morgan posted a short animated film entitled "THE CAT WITH HANDS." The film features a stop-motion animated cat that has human hands instead of paws. The post received more than 973,000 views in less than 11 years (shown below).



Spread

On January 16th, 2020, Redditor [2] BraySC shared an image of another cat with prosthetic hands. The post received more than 19,000 points (95% upvoted) and 155 comments in less than five days (shown below, left). The image was also shared in the /r/blursedimages subreddit,[3] receiving more than 12,000 points (99% upvoted) and 65 comments.

Two days later, on January 18th, Twitter[4] user @thekevb shared a version of a cat with prosthetics and the caption, "Judi Dench making the Jellicle Choice in the first version of Cats (2019). The post received more than 28,000 likes and 4,100 retweets in less than two days (shown below, center).

That day, Redditor[5] Hoi_Im_Just_Temmie shared a variation with a white cat in the /r/blursedimages subreddit. The post received more than 42,000 points (96% upvoted) and 275 comments in less than two days (shown below, right).
