About
Clothes Swap Fanarts are a popular kind of fan-made drawings, in which fictional characters are wearing a set of clothing that is typically associated with another character, either from the same franchise or from an entirely different one.
History
Although it's possible that such fan arts have been around for much longer before, the oldest still accessible online seems to be a drawing of Sonic The Hedgehog characters Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat, uploaded by LightDemonCodeH on DeviantArt on June 6th, 2005[1]. It has since been a popular kind of art on this website, with more than 38,000 variations on it as of 2024.
Some pairings have been particularly inspirational for online artists, due to character similarities; for instance, fanarts of Chun-Li and Yor Forger (both attractive and physically strong fighters), those of Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat (two female protagonists from the same franchise), and those of Kobeni Higashiyama and Pomni (both pushed-around women prone to panic), will often display one or both of these characters wearing the other's outfit.
