Coconut Malled, or Coconut Mall'd, refers to a series of bait-and-switch videos similar to the Rickroll in which a viewer is tricked into listening to the Mario Kart track "Coconut Mall." The trend first appeared on TikTok in November 2020, resulting in a number of variations over the following months.

Origin

On November 25th, 2020, TikToker^[2] @jakedoesmusicsometimes posted a video that appears to teach the viewer about gaining more views on TikTok. Near the end of the video, the screen suddenly cuts to footage of Mario Kart over "Coconut Mall"^[1] and bright text reading, "Coconut Mall'd!!!," telling viewers to share it with friends and families (shown below). The video gained over 580,000 views in six months.

On January 31st, 2021, TikToker @youiefilms posted a video of Minecraft footage over "Coconut Mall" with a voiceover saying, "You just got Coconut Malled. Share with your friends to totally Coconut Mall them," garnering over 5.2 million views in four months (shown below).

The original sound went viral, inspiring over 4,700 videos to use it in four months. On the same day as Youiefilms, TikToker @gu3st0624 posted a video using the sound set to footage from Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, garnering over 5.3 million views in the same span of time (shown below). This is the most popular video following the trend as of May 2021.

On February 5th, Urban Dictionary^[4] user stupid idiot dumbo defined "coconut malled." On the same day, TikToker @raysgamez posted a "Coconut Malled" video appearing to be a Minecraft tutorial, garnering over 1.5 million views in three months (shown below).

On February 8th and 9th, TikToker @maanmaj posted two variations of the video saying "you just got Rainbow Road'd" and "You just got Moo Moo Meadow'd," referencing two other Mario Kart tracks, garnering over 1 million views each in three months (shown below, left and right).

On March 5th, 2021, YouTuber^[5] Joe Jenkins released a video titled "You just got COCONUT MALLED" in which he is pushed through the mall on a dolly playing "Coconut Mall" on the piano while dressed like Mario (shown below). The video gained over 3 million views in two months.

On March 21st, Instagram^[3] user @lancevideos posted a Joe Biden Tripping photoshop captioned, "BIDEN JUST GOT COCONUT MALLED," garnering over 1,700 likes in two months (shown below).
