About
Danny Dorito is a portmanteau of actor Hollywood actor Danny DeVito and the snack food Doritos, which inspired a series of image edits that feature DeVito's face on a Dorito chip.
Origin
On June 2nd, 2014, Tumblr [1] user scrotumnose shared the earliest available Danny Dorito art. The post, a portrait of Danny DeVito with the head of a Dorito chip, received more than 6,200 points notes in less than seven years (shown below).
Spread
On June 24th, 2014, Tumblr[3] user champagnemanagement shared a GIF of DeVito morphing into a Dorito. The post received more than 590 notes in less than seve years (shown below, left).
The following month, on July 3rd, 2014, Redditor BillyTheKid_ shared the scrotumnose image on the /r/funny[2] subreddit. The post received more than 6,200 points (81% upvoted) and 75 comments in less than seven years.
Over the next few years, the character mashup became a popular subject on Etsy, appearing on t-shirts, stickers and toys (example below, center).
On September 17th, 2017, Instagram [4] artist "adam.the.creator" posted a Elf on a Shelf meme featuring "DeVito on a Dorito." The post recieved more than 15,000 likes in less than four years (shown below, right).
