Destroy the Financial District, Godzilla is an exploitable meme format based on an edited screenshot from the 1994 video game Super Godzilla on the Super Nintendo, in which a woman tells Godzilla, "Go ahead and destroy the financial district, Godzilla. Make the people happy."

The edit was originally posted to the /r/DankLeft subreddit by Redditor kevinowdziej in late August 2025. It spread over the next few years, inspiring edits and redraws that both alter the caption and replace Godzilla with other characters and monsters.

Origin

On August 25th, 2021, Redditor kevinowdziej posted an edit of a screenshot from the 1994 SNES video game Super Godzilla^[1] to the /r/DankLeft^[2] subreddit, where a character tells Godzilla, "Go ahead and destroy the financial district, Godzilla. Make the people happy," garnering over 6,300 upvotes in five years.

On January 10th, 2024, X^[3] / Twitter user @Dreweyes posted an edit of the meme that replaces Godzilla with a giant Kirby, garnering over 30,000 likes in two years.

On July 17th, 2024, X^[4] user @SigmaPosting posted a version of the meme based on the game Mega Man X, garnering over 1,100 likes in two years.

On June 9th, 2026, X^[5] user @MemoryCardFiles posted an edit where "financial district" has been replaced by "AI data centers," garnering over 5,300 likes in under a day.
