Overview
Kylie Jenner's Navajo Slot Canyon Controversy refers to the photos Kylie Jenner in a bikini at Slot Canyons which were posted to her Instagram in July 2020. The photos gained controversy on Twitter due to Jenner allegedly being on Navajo land while parks are shut down during the coronavirus pandemic.
Background
On July 10th, Kylie Jenner posted several photos of herself in a bikini with her head back to Instagram.[1] One photo that featured Jenner in a canyon garnered over 10.2 million likes in four days (shown below).
Spread
On July 11th, 2020, Twitter user @jaboukie[2] shared Jenner's images and captioned them, "no one: baby birds when their moms come back with fresh vomit:" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 404,600 likes and 43,8000 retweets in three days. The next day, Twitter user @ABecenti[3] shared the posts saying, "Kyle Jenner was enjoying Slot Canyons, which is supposed to be closed to tourists because of COVID-19. Navajo parks are closed to visitors and tourists since March and are still shut down. What’s wrong with her head? Is it too heavy to hold up?" (shown below, right). The tweet accumulated over 2,100 likes and 580 retweets in two days.
The next day, Twitter user @meggerzmac[4] posted, "I have seen twitter debate about whether or not Kylie was actually on Navajo sacred territory or not but regardless this just reminded me of how much I hate how the Kardashian/jenners are so idolized. If you love the Kardashians I strongly urge you to think about why that is" (shown below). There were debates as to whether Jenner was actually on Navajo land. According to The Daily Dot,[5] "Jenner’s Instagram showed that she was staying in the luxury Amingiri Hotel in Canyon Point, Utah, located less than 20 miles outside of the Navajo Nation. It’s unclear which slot canyon Jenner took her photographs in, though many on social media believe it to be Antelope Canyon, the most famous of the slot canyons and located within the Navajo territory."
