First World Problems Cat is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photo of a young kitten resting its head accompanied by various complaints about trivial problems experienced by house cats.

Origin

On September 12th, 2011, the earliest known example (shown left) was submitted to Reddit^[1] which contained a photo of a cat standing on its hind legs while making a sad-looking expression with the caption "No wet food? / hafta eat the dry stuff." On November 14th, the "Cat World Problems" Tumblr^[8] was created which featured image macros of a cat silhouette (shown middle) with anthropomorphic feline complaints. On January 11th, 2012, the first Quickmeme version of the series was submitted to the /r/AdviceAnimals^[1] subreddit which included a photo of a young kitten with the caption "The clean laundry / isn't in the sunlight" (shown right). In two months the post received over 5,000 up votes.

Spread

On January 17th, 2012, Redditor SadlyOptimistic8 submitted an First World Cat Problems image macro to the /r/AdviceAnimals^[9] subreddit with the caption ""I want to sleep on the keyboard / but no one is using the computer." The post subsequently reached the front page and received over 9,500 up votes in less than 2 months.

On January 24th, the Internet humor site UpRoxx published an article about the Quickmeme series and included a slide show of notable examples. The meme continued to spread on sites like Tumblr^[7], FunnyJunk^[6] and the Cheezburger site Meme Animals.^[5] The Quickmeme^[2] page has accumulated over 1450 submissions as of March 14th, 2012.
