On January 1st, 2025, TikTok^[1] user @stumblebumblerizz posted a freaky image macro based on a 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy movie poster of comic book character Groot. In the video, the image of Groot is captioned, "I am goon," in Papyrus font. The video (shown below) received over 900 views and 110 likes in four weeks.

On January 4th, 2025, Instagram^[2] user mcfreakery reposted the video, with the post gaining over 88,800 likes in four weeks. Later that day, Instagram^[3] user downzyndrome posted a still image of the macro from the video (shown below).

Spread

On January 11th, 2025, the X^[3] / Twitter gimmick account @hourly_shitpost reposted the image, with the post (shown below) gaining over 2 million views, 4,500 reposts and 66,000 likes in three weeks.

In the following weeks, the image saw viral spread online, achieving popularity as a hornyposting reaction to content users found arousing. For example, on January 22nd, 2025, X^[4] user @ReignOfPride used the image to react to the Casual Mai Shiranui outfit, with the post (shown below) gaining over 1,200 reposts and 33,000 likes in one week.

Additionally, the original image has also been humorously edited in memes. For example, on January 28th, 2025, rapper bbno$ posted an edit of the image with his own face edited in. The post (shown below) garnered over 2,200 reposts and 51,000 likes on X^[5] in one day.

On TikTok,^[6][7] the image has also been used in Marvel Rivals gameplay edits as Groot is one of the playable characters in the video game.
