I Did What It Took To Get #1 refers to a copypasta that grew popular among the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate competitive community after Colorado player BANG! complained about being ranked #2 in the state Power Rankings (PR), writing, "Really upset tbh. I did what it took to get #1 but sadly the muppets and monkies on the panel couldn't figure it out. Biased as hell if u think this was well done your as much of an idiot as the panel members." After the Colorado Player Ranking committee updated their decision to make BANG! #1, other top players who weren't ranked #1 in their respective states posted the copypasta as a joke.

Origin

On January 3rd, 2022, Colorado Smash Ultimate, a group of tournament organizers and player rankers, announced their top players for Q4 for 2021,^[1] ranking player Chronos first and BANG! second (shown below, left). In response, BANG!^[2] sent an angry tweet that read, "Really upset tbh. I did what it took to get #1 but sadly the muppets and monkies on the panel couldn't figure it out. Biased as hell if u think this was well done your as much of an idiot as the panel members" (shown below, right). Of note, Chronos has a winning record against BANG!, has performed well in out-of-state tournaments and scored an upset against top 10 global player Kola.

On January 5th, 2022, the Colorado Smash Ultimate panel updated their rankings, putting BANG! as #1.^[3] In a video, a panelist explained that a weekly tournament that took place in a bar was not counted in an original tally because it was biased against people who couldn't attend due to age restrictions. Later, that restriction was lifted, but the tournament initially did not count towards the player rankings. Once the panelists counted that tournament, their system gave BANG! enough points to be #1 in their ranking.

The explanation still proved controversial, as Chronos had a winning record against BANG! and had performed well at major tournaments out of state, though Colorado rules stated that out-of-state performances would not be counted towards PR. As other states released their power rankings, other professional players posted BANG!'s angry tweet as a copypasta as a way to joke about the controversy. For example, top New York player Zomba,^[4] ranked #2 in the state, posted the copypasta on January 6th, 2022, gaining over 880 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). Kurama,^[5] ranked #2 in the Northern California region, also posted the copypasta that day, gaining over 650 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).

In response to the controversy, BANG! admitted in a video that he was overly sour at the initial ranking and found the copypasta funny in hindsight, but defended why he believed he was number 1 in Colorado.
