About

If a Baguette Could Move refers to a viral debate presented by Twitter user @sheepfilms about how a baguette would move itself if it could, similar to viral debates such as If a Dog Wore Pants.

Origin

On February 7th, 2019, Twitter user @sheepfilms posted a GIF featuring four proposed movements of how a baguette would move if it had the capability (shown below). The tweet gained over 67,000 retweets and 193,000 likes.

Spread

After posting the GIF, @sheepfilms provided a poll for users to vote on how they thought the baguette would move, with the choices dubbed "Worm," "Gallop," "Robot Rotate" and "Caterpillar." The poll gained over 364,000 votes.

The tweet was amplified by Chrissy Teigen, who quote-tweeted it and wrote "3 is the most delicious baguette. Or it is months old. Or if we are giving this bread moving capabilities at all, why wouldn’t it just propel forward, flat like a locomotive? Or roll on its side maybe." Her tweet gained over 2,300 retweets and 38,000 likes (shown below, left). User @moonjam also voted 3, giving reasoning that netted them 1,300 retweets and 20,000 likes (shown below, right).

christine teigen @chrissyteigen Following 3 is the most delicious baguette. Or it is months old. Or if we are giving this bread moving capabilities at all, why wouldn't it just propel forward, flat like a locomotive? Or roll on its side maybe 2 Dave @sheepfilms If baguettes could move, how would they move? Give your reasoning pls Show this thread 4 0:01 2:11 PM-7 Feb 2019
AJ Jefferies @moonjam Follow Replying to @sheepfilms 3 - it's the only form of locomotion that leaves the crust reasonably intact. The others are all possible but the bread would scream the entire time (this is actually where the French word 'pain' originates) 8:33 AM-7 Feb 2019

Other popular responses include a post by user @Bouletcorp that gained over 40 retweets and 1,300 likes (shown below, left) and a tweet by @nosoco_ that gained 190 retweets and 3,000 likes (shown below, right). The responses were covered by Twitter Moments.[1] The GIF was posted to /r/GIFs[2] where it gained over 8,800 points and was crossposted to /r/me_irl[3] where it gained over 1,400 points.

-Boulet- @Bouletcorp Follow Replying to @sheepfilms The second one seems more efficient, plus there is minimal friction with the ground keeping the baguette edible (if you cut the ends. "Les croûtons" as we say in french.) 1:00 PM-7 Feb 2019
noSOCO @nosoco Follow Replying to @Bouletcorp @sheepfilms What if the croûtons were actually calluses the baguettes get from walking? 1:53 PM-7 Feb 2019

Various Examples

John McArthur @DeltaHuskyote 23h Replying to @sheepfilms @lgorBrazillian They can do any, it depends on the baguette's mood Dave @sheepfilms 23h THANK YOU GIF
One Fine Weasel Follow @onefineweasel Replying to @sheepfilms l voted 2 but somebody else suggested hopping on its end which I would also vote for because these moves are jaunty, and baguettes are very jaunty 9:01 AM-7 Feb 2019
love,,,bird @Bagofingers Follow Replying to@sheepfilms @birdybirdOnline I'm in the minority here but I'm going with number one because baguette doesn't have bones. 1:09 AM-7 Feb 2019
Jim Lippard @lippard Follow Replying to @sheepfilms @DannyKodicek l think they soar through the air, either like a missile or a boomerang 11:11 AM- 7 Feb 2019
KrispyKrémeMcdonald @SourCreamMcSalt Follow Replying to @sheepfilms @ergo_praxis You forgot the most obvious option: rolling sideways 11:10 AM -7 Feb 2019
Danny Kodicek @DannyKodicek Follow Replying to @sheepfilms You missed hopping on its end 8:39 AM -7 Feb 2019
