Woman Shutting the Door, also known by the caption "I'm So Lonely," refers to a single-panel exploitable meme format in which a woman is sitting at her door and laments her loneliness, all while holding the door against many men holding flowers that are romantically interested in her. Originally posted by Sundae Kids in 2018, the cartoon achieved virality as a meme format, being edited in various ways such as recaptioning the speech bubble.
Origin
On June 19th, 2018, webcomic artist Sundae Kids uploaded a single-panel cartoon in which a woman pushed a door against multiple men seeking her attention while commenting that she is very lonely. The post (shown below) received over 69,000 reactions and 48,000 shares on Facebook[1] in six years, with Instagram[2] and X[3] / Twitter reposts gaining over 39,000 likes in six years and 2,200 reposts and 2,600 likes, respectively, in five years.
On July 14th, 2018, X[4] / Twitter user @Andregchan12 posted the earliest meme based on the image, captioning it, "girls on Twitter be like:" The post (shown below, left) received over 13,000 reposts and 16,000 likes in six years. On July 17th, X[5] user @billy__romeo replied with the earliest found edit of the image, gaining over 2,600 reposts and 12,000 likes in six years (shown below, right).
Spread
On January 28th, 2019, X / Twitter user captioned the image with a disputed story about the /r/ForeverAloneWomen subreddit, writing, "Literally this fucking meme" (post since removed). A screenshot of the post was widely circulated online shortly after.
For example, on January 29th, 2019, Imgur[6] user kajiggerful3000 posted it, with the post gaining over 115,000 views in five years. On December 31st, 2020, iFunny[7] user Fauna posted it, with the post being featured and gaining over 39,000 likes in three years (shown below, right).
The image spawned more caption memes and edits in the following years. For example, on May 3rd, 2022, Tumblr[8] user dallydewdrop posted a recaptioned edit that received over 510 reblogs and 1,200 likes in two years (shown below, left). On May 22nd, X[9] user @tristehomo shared a schizopost that garnered over 2,000 reposts and 13,000 likes in a similar timeframe (author unknown; shown below, right).
