About
Jingled is a slang term meaning to be trolled by NBA player Joe Ingles of the Utah Jazz. The term is used similarly to Beaned and was popularized by an image macro using Ingles in the Beaned template. It can be used as a slang term for when Ingles has a good performance against another team (e.g. "The Rockets were totally Jingled") or used as a bait-and-switch gag online.
Origin
The term "Jingled" is a portmanteau of Joe Ingles' name, turning J. Ingles into "Jingles." An image macro putting Ingles into the Beaned template began circulating among NBA and Jazz fans on Reddit in late 2017. One of the earliest examples was posted December 17th, 2017 by user dietz_ (shown below).[1]
Spread
In the following months, the term "Jingled" spread among Jazz fans who used it to describe good performances by Ingles. On January 31st, 2018, a thread in /r/nba recapping a game between the Jazz and the Golden State Warriors used the term "Jingled" in the title, implying the Warriors were beaten thanks in part to a strong game from Ingles.[2] On March 20th, 2018, the Utah Jazz Twitter account used #jingled in a highlight of Ingles (shown below).
The term began growing more popular in April of 2018 as the NBA playoffs began. On April 11th, 2018, Redditor GrandmasSpaghetti posted what they considered a tamer version of the "Jingled" image in the hopes of getting it on their home arena's big screen (shown below).
In the playoffs, the Jazz won their first series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Ingles had a strong performance in the series, helping the team achieve a 4-1 series victory, which further helped the "Jingled" meme spread. The meme grew popular enough that the subreddit for Jazz fans, /r/UtahJazz, began referring to its subscribers as "friccin morons."[3] A definition for "Jingled" was submitted to Urban Dictionary on April 15th, 2018[4] (shown below, left). The meme grew popular enough among NBA fans on social media that an edit of the "Jingled" image was made featuring Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr (shown below, right).
Questions about the Jingled meme have been submitted to /r/OutOfTheLoop[5] and /r/UtahJazz.[6]
