About

"Makers" Adding "Unnecessary Sex Scenes" refers to a series of jokes that satirize Gen Z Sex Negativity discourse by parodying an Overflowing Coffee meme that shows a hand titled "makers" overfilling a cup labeled "any show / movie" with the cappuccino labeled "useless s€x scenes." The joke also serves to highlight the supposed absurdity of flattening filmmakers into the label "makers." Memes about "makers" adding "unnecessary sex scenes" to films and television shows was popularized in 2024.

Origin

On August 9th, 2023, an unknown Redditor[1] added a Coffee Overflowing meme to the /r/memes subreddit with the caption, "'The idol' left the chat." The post showed a hand labeled "makers" pouring coffee labeled "useless s€x scenes" into a cup labeled "any show/movie." The post gathered over 47,000 upvotes in a year (seen below).

The image was widely reposted in subsequent weeks, including on iFunny,[2] where it gathered over 5,000 smiles in a year, on Instagram,[3] where it gathered over 26,000 likes in 10 months, and by @wildtiktokss on X / Twitter,[5] where it gathered over 155,000 likes in a year.

Precursor

Discussions about people flattening different aspects of filmmaking in the labels of "makers" or "creators" gained traction in 2023, with HBO Max's decision to flatten all filmmaking credits into "creators" being a notable event. This decision was later retracted, with correctly labeled credits being added back to the streaming service in May 2023.[4] These discussions ran parallel with critiques of internet slang that places all forms of audio-visual art under the umbrella of "content" or "media."

In 2023, there was also a rise in discussions about Gen Z supposedly being more prudish and sex-negative.

Ghibli food is part of the visual atmosphere and not a scene onto itself commanding your whole attention.
Yes, the same rules apply to action scenes. Good action scenes drive plot and communicate things about the characters involved with them while maintaining the spectacle. Action scenes that go nowhere and have nothing to say get boring fast, regardless of spectacle.
