About

My Pronouns Are "He," Not "Him," Cause I'll Never Be "Him" refers to a TikTok sound and exploitable catchphrase started by TikToker @nopotatoess, also known as PlainPotatoess on Instagram. The first video with the audio was posted in July 2021, becoming popularized through lip-dub and remixes in August 2021.

Origin

On July 29th, 2021, TikToker[1] @nopotatoess posted the original video as part of his "Lonely series," which all use the same TikTok sound "ive never felt so alone."[2] This original TikTok (shown below, left) got roughly 2.4 million views and 605,000 likes in one week. @nopotatoess was prompted in a comment on the video that same day to post the TikTok as a separate video to make it an original sound others could use. This TikTok, posted on the 29th as well (shown below, right), would receive roughly 1.1 million views and 112,000 likes in one week and became the main source for the exploitable sound going forward.

Spread

Going into the first week of August 2021, the earliest adopters of the sound were FitnessTokers and FishTokers (examples shown below) with many of the FishTokers comparing themselves to legendary fisherman and TV host Bill Dance.[3]

Within the first week of August 2021, more TikTokers started to join the trend, using the sound as a way to showcase their male role models, and in more ironic instances, showcase who they look like by making an edit at the pivotal point in the sound ("Cause I'll Never Be 'Him'") cutting to their doppelganger.

The trend continued into August 2021, and as of August 19th, the sound was used in roughly 25,000 videos.[4]
