About

Diddybop, also known as Diddybop76, Trap Queen Owen or @ripdiddybop, refers to a TikToker and TikTok e-boy who went viral in May 2023 for a video of him and his three friends (including Henry Kava) dancing to a Playboi Carti song. Thereafter, Diddybop continued to go viral on TikTok, growing a cult following on the app, leading to many memes and discourse about his awkwardness and appearance that surfaced on Twitter and Instagram. Diddybop later revealed his real name, Owen, and also that he was playing a character by slicking his hair to the side and making a weird face. TikTokers were made aware of Diddybop's true self via what was dubbed his "normal" account @bigyellowbird38892773. Eventually, Diddybop "clones" surfaced online, additionally inspiring memes and discourse.

Online History

Diddybop's TikTok presence started on January 19th, 2020, when he posted his first TikTok^[1] to his main account @bigyellowbird38892773. On November 25th, 2022, Diddybop posted his first TikTok^[2] to his secondary account @ripdiddybop, gaining roughly 337,100 plays and 65,500 likes in eight months (shown below, left). On April 7th, 2023, Diddybop posted a TikTok^[3] to @ripdiddybop that gained roughly 4.4 million plays and 789,100 likes in three months which notably grew an early following for him (shown below, right).

Diddybop continued to amass viral videos going into mid-2023. For instance, a notable Diddybop video was posted on May 6th, 2023, to Henry Kava's TikTok^[4] account @moonehfun. Diddybop, Kava and two other friends were dancing to a Playboi Carti song and gained roughly 2,9 million plays and 329,400 likes in two months (shown below).

Reactions

The aforementioned TikTok^[4] started to gain cross-platform spread after it went viral on TikTok. For instance, the most notable repost was a tweet shared by the Twitter^[5] account @therealugs on May 8th, 2023, who captioned it, "A video of Playboi Carti fans has gone viral," gaining roughly 49,100 likes in two months (shown below).

The video gained viral reactions on Twitter, such as a QRT sent by Twitter^[6] user @haneswhitetee that read, "what if i told you these are some of the greatest minds the world has ever seen," gaining roughy 18,000 likes in two months.

Additional Spread

Diddybop started to go viral on Instagram around the same time, such as a post shared on June 21st, 2023, to Instagram^[7] that showed him, Kava and two others wearing graphic t-shirts with "gay," "abortion," "slut" and "big dick" written on them, gaining roughly 17,800 likes in one month (shown below, left). The image gained memetic usage, such as in a tweet^[8] sent by the gimmick account shirts that go hard on June 24th, 2023, which captioned it, "tag yourself," gaining roughly 13,000 likes (shown below, right).

The tweet then inspired redraws of the image, such as a QRT shared by Twitter^[9] user @SLAUGHTERHOU2E on June 25th, 2023, that gained roughly 1,300 likes in one month (shown below, left).

Diddybop Normal Account

Diddybop's two TikTok^[10][11] accounts @ripdiddybop and @bigyellowbird38892773 ultimately contrasted due to Diddybop playing a character on @ripdiddybop while dressing normally on @bigyellowbird38892773. What was dubbed Diddybop's "normal" account (@bigyellowbird38892773) gained awareness most notably in July 2023 (examples shown below). Reactions to his "normal" account mostly expressed surprise in the comment sections.

Diddybop "Clones"

Sometime before July 19th, 2023, TikToker @seb.rrr posted a video of him and three friends seemingly recreating the video style of Diddybop and Henry Kava. The original video was deleted by @seb.rrr, likely due to backlash that surfaced when Twitter^[12] user @pleadead tweeted a screenshot of the video on July 19th, captioning it, "So fucking embarrassing," and gaining roughly 37,500 likes in two days (shown below).

Two hours after the aforementioned tweet, on July 19th, Twitter^[13] user @antlvl tweeted a different video from TikToker^[14] @seb.rrr that was posted on July 19th, featuring the same set of guys. On TikTok,^[14] @seb.rrr's video received roughly 804,900 plays and 130,100 likes in two days. Meanwhile, Twitter^[13] user @antlvl's repost of the video, captioned, "This is so cringe," gained roughly 2,400 likes in two days (shown below).

In the comment section of the TikTok^[14] video (which included #diddybop76 in its caption), others referenced Diddybop. On Twitter, Twitter^[15] @dranksoja replied to @antlvl, "diddybop having clones is just insane," gaining roughly 1,400 likes in two days. The use of the word "clones" was in reference to the slang term started by the iShowSpeed Clones meme.
