About
Rosalina is a character from Super Mario Bros., most known for her appearances in the Galaxy series of games, first appearing in the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy and later appearing in its sequel and numerous spin-off games. Rosalina is known as the caretaker of the Lumas. Her status as a princess has been debated online, and she is usually addressed simply as "Rosalina," although some argue that she is the "princess of the galaxy," making her a princess like Peach and Daisy. Rosalina became a fan favorite character throughout the 2010s and 2020s, inspiring fan art, content and memes. Some notable Rosalina-related memes include Rosalina is Cute! CUTE!, and the Angry Rosalina face.
History
Appearances In Video Games
On November 1st, 2007, Super Mario Galaxy was released. The game features Rosalina, the caretaker of the star-like creatures, the Lumas, all of whom stay at the Comet Observatory, acting as the game's hub world. Rosalina tasks Mario with retrieving the lost Power Stars so she can turn the Comet Observatory into a comet and shoot them across the universe to save Princess Peach from Bowser.
Rosalina is also featured in the game's sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, released on May 23rd, 2010.
On November 21st, 2013, Super Mario 3D World was released, including Rosalina as an unlockable character.
Since then, Rosalina has appeared in numerous video games[1] to varying degrees, sometimes as a cameo and sometimes as a playable character. She appears in four Mario Kart games, including Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart World. She also appears in:

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
On September 12th, 2025, the Nintendo of America YouTube[2] channel streamed a Nintendo Direct event. During the event, in celebration of Super Mario's 40th anniversary, the first announcement was for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a sequel to 2023's animated The Super Mario Movie. A release date of April 3rd, 2026, was revealed, along with confirmation that the main voice cast from the first film is returning.
Along with this, a re-release of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 was also announced during the event.
The film's isolated teaser was uploaded to the Nintendo of America YouTube[3] channel shortly after the stream, garnering over 100,000 views in about two hours. It is assumed that Rosalina will appear in the movie, however, she was not explicitly announced.
Fake Rosalina Leaks
Between September 22nd and 23rd, 2025, TikToker[4] @galaxy.leaks posted a series of images they claimed to be leaks from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, set to release in 2026. Among those leaks are numerous images purported to show the character Rosalina and how she'll look in the film. The authenticity of the leaks was originally unconfirmed, and it was unclear where the TikToker got the images until a YouTuber took credit for faking them days later. The leak is now considered fake.
The fake leak inspired numerous memes using the 3D render of Rosalina frowning.
Online Presence
Rosalina became a popular character following her appearance in Super Mario Galaxy in 2007. One of the earliest known pieces of Rosalina fan art was posted by DeviantArt[5] user rongs1234 on November 21st, 2007, only three weeks after the game's release, garnering over 30,000 views and 830 favorites in 18 years.
On May 6th, 2014, Nintendo Life[6] published an article about Mario Kart where writer Jake Shapiro offers criticism of the Mario Kart 7 roster, including too many princesses, writing in Rosalina's section, "It’s a bummer that every single female-identified character in Mario Kart 8 is a princess, aside from Toadette and Wendy Koopa. What message does this send to kids? 'If you’re a boy, you can be whatever you want to be, and if you’re a girl… you can be a princess.'"
On December 6th, 2021, X[7] user @SenchoDoodle posted a Difference Between Shy and Introvert meme about Princess Peach and Rosalina, garnering over 5,100 likes in four years.
On July 15th, 2024, Redditor u/StrawberriDreams made a post to the /r/Mario[8] subreddit asking if Rosalina is a princess, inspiring some discussion on the topic.
On June 25th, 2025, Redditor u/Espion_SB posted a meme to the /r/Mario[9] subreddit about Rosalina being a "literal goddess" but also driving go-karts, garnering over 1,200 upvotes in three months.
