About
Rules of the Pirate Code refers to a series of Pirateposting memes which list made-up humorous and wholesome rules from the pirate code. Spawned by a viral image macro, the format gained popularity online in September 2023 and shares similarities and style with the Edgy Skeletons format.
Origin
Historically, pirate code were a code of conduct for governing pirates, usually created by crews of pirates in order to maintain discipline within their ranks. Breaking such code could result in the perpetrator getting killed, marooned or otherwise punished.[1]
On June 9th, 2023, iFunny[2] user ItsMikeSchmidt posted a Pirateposting image macro captioned "Rule 1 of the pirate code: never make another pirate cry." The post (shown below) garnered over 6,700 smiles on the platform in three months.
Spread
On August 27th, 2023, X / Twitter[3] gimmick account @pirate_posting reposted the meme, with the post gaining over 1,900 retweets and 15,300 likes in one months. On September 18th, 2023, gimmick account @hourly_shitpost[4] made another repost which received over 6,200 reposts and 68,200 likes in ten days. On September 19th, 2023, voice actor Chris Voiceman posted a voiced version of the meme that received over 180 retweets and 730 likes on X[5] and 13,000 views on YouTube[6] in nine days (shown below).

Starting on September 12th, 2023, the meme format saw further use on iFunny. On that day, iFunny[7] user ThehamburglerKing posted an image macro meme based on the format that garnered over 12,900 smiles in two weeks (shown below, left). On September 17th, user clutchnugget posted[8] a version that received over 15,300 smiles in the same period (shown below, right).
