The trend was popularized on X / Twitter in April 2024, coinciding with season two of Smiling Friends, after user @roshinyukai_rin posted fan art depicting Pim and Charlie from Smiling Friends dressed as Pearl and Rose Quartz from Steven Universe.

On April 15th, 2024, X[1] user @roshinyukai_rin posted fan art depicting Charlie and Pim as Rose Quartz and Peal from the Cartoon Network show Steven Universe. The post gathered over 4 million views and 21,000 likes in 10 days (seen below).

On April 16th, 2024, X[2] user @piss_wizzard posted an edit of Charlie-as-Rose-Quartz alongside a caption that read, "When a Critter is made, it's for a reason. They burst out of the ground already knowing what they're supposed to be, and then… that's what they are. Forever. But you, you're supposed to change." The post gathered over 7,000 likes in nine days (seen below, left).
Also on April 16th, X[3] user @Artsu_kai posted an edit of Charlie relaying an edited Rose Quartz dialogue to reassure Smormu, gathering over 5,000 likes in nine days on a post that read, "Look man, we can't both exist alright?
