About
Smoking On That Shit That X, also written with the additional word Smoking On That Shit That Made X or Smoking On That Shit That Killed X, refers to a phrasal template that imagines a marijuana strain powerful enough to change one thing into another, usually resulting in a pun. It was first popularized by a Lil Wayne lyric in the song "Stunt Hard" by Drake from 2008, which also featured rapper Kidd Kidd. However, it was used most notably in early 2021 and 2022.
Origin
On December 13th, 2009, Drake released an album called "Heartbreak Drake" that featured a song titled "Stunt Hard." [1] The track featured both rappers Lil Wayne and Kidd Kidd. It was first uploaded to MySpace in December 2008 but later uploaded by the YouTube channel DwaynedaKid on December 7th, 2008, where over the course of 14 years, it received roughly 489,800 views (shown below, left). At the 2:10 mark of the song, Lil Wayne raps the lyric, "And I smoke that shit that smell like when you take your cast off."
On February 13th, 2010, Twitter[2] user ThrillaP tweeted the aforementioned Lil Wayne lyric, effectively being the first person on Twitter to use some form of the phrasal template. Over the course of 12 years, the tweet received no likes (shown below, right).
Spread
Although the phrasal template was used thousands of times from 2008 to 2019, it wasn't until late 2020 that tweets using it started to receive upwards of 50 likes. The most notable tweet that inspired the rise in usage was posted on September 19th, 2020, by Twitter[3] user DerekPutin who said, "I'm smoking on that shit that killed Jordan Peterson," earning roughly 4,000 likes over the course of a year and a half (shown below). The tweet was not only the first to reach over 50 likes but also over 1,000.
On October 1st, 2020, Twitter[4] user coolp1np tweeted, "Smoking on that shit that killed RBG," earning roughly 3,300 likes in a year and a half (shown below, left). On February 20th, 2021, Twitter[5] user spiritnght2 tweeted a photo of John Lennon walking funny, captioning it, "I’m smoking on that shit that made john lennon walk like this," and earning roughly 143,000 likes over the course of one year (shown below, right). This aforementioned tweet was the first to receive over 100,000 likes.
The trend continued going into the remainder of 2021 and into early 2022. In February 2022, the snowclone saw a dramatic uptick in usage after a tweet from Twitter[6] user troughofluxury was posted on February 27th and received roughly 46,100 likes in two days (shown below).
