About
Son, I Say Son, Turn That Lynyrd Skynyrd Up refers to an exploitable featuring cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn with a confederate flag telling the viewer to turn the volume up when the rock-n-roll band Lynyrd Skynyrd comes on. It was made on the website Pic Collage by an unknown user. After being shared ironically on Tumblr in 2015, the Cursed Boomer Image was recaptioned by meme creators and shitposters on iFunny and Instagram who inserted their own references like other musicians.
Origin
The original image macro was created by a Pic Collage user sometime in late 2014 or early 2015, however, the creator is unknown. The first time it was shared online was on November 30th, 2015 by the Tumblr[1] blog thejorie (since-deactivated) where over the course of seven years it received roughly 2,500 notes.
Despite the aforementioned Tumblr post being the first known, more high definition posts of the image were made in 2016 on Facebook[2] and Pinterest [3] (shown below).
Spread
Going into the 2010s, the image was shared by multiple internet users across platforms. For instance, on June 14th, 2017, a moldy reupload from Instagram (since-deleted) was posted to OnSizzle.[4] On July 23rd, 2018, the image was shared to Reddit's /r/comedyheaven[5] by Redditor GenericBeige who earned roughly 1,000 upvotes over the course of four years.
On August 25th, 2018, Youtuber Squidtarded posted a video meme with the image, doing an ear rape voiceover and receiving roughly 4,600 views in four years (shown below).
On February 12th, 2019, iFunnyer[6] Mr__PigV2 posted a recaptioned meme of Leghorn shouting the phrase at a political cartoon of former U.S. President "Donald Trump," earning nine smiles in three years (shown below, left). On June 3rd, 2019, iFunnyer[7] AmericaFirstPatriot posted a video that used the image, replacing most of the text to reference Libyan Arab Jamahiriya resistance music, earning over 25 smiles in three years (shown below, right).
On September 28th, 2021, the original meme was shared to Instagram[8] by the account patiasfantasyworld, earning roughly 13,800 likes over the course of eight months. On October 8th, 2021, Instagram[9] account gorillagripgrussy replaced Lynyrd Skynyrd with Hatsune Miku, earning roughly 2,300 likes in seven months (shown below).
Overall, most of the meme's usage was on iFunny and Instagram going into the early 2020s.
