Sonic Praying, also known as Christian Sonic Fan Art refers to a series of fan art and memes depicting Sonic The Hedgehog character as a Christian on his knees praying. The fan art was originally drawn sometime in 2011, posted to the Sonic Retro blog in October 2012, but it only gained viral usage in early 2020 as a popular exploitable and reaction meme on Tumblr, Twitter, / X and Reddit.

Origin

On October 22nd, 2022, the Sonic Retro^[1] page uploaded a series of Christian Sonic fan arts, with one particular illustration showing the character praying in the middle of a grass field at night with a signature dating back to 2011 (seen below).

Spread

The fan art gained viral recognition almost a decade later, being used as an exploitable and image macro on Tumblr and X. For example, on July 21st, 2021, Tumblr^[2] user @free-range-tiddies added the macro "Thank you good for not making me attracted to feet" over the Sonic praying fan art (seen below), which received roughly 657 likes and 412 reposts in four years.

On July 28th, 2023, Redditor^[3] u/alexgspissbottle posted part of The Smiths' "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" song accompanied by the Sonic praying fan art, amassing roughly 108 upvotes and 19 comments in two years.
