Part of a series on Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers. [View Related Entries]

About

Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers is the name of a 2022 movie soft-rebooting the Disney Chip 'n Dale franchise for newer audiences while acting as a sequel piece to both it and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which also takes place in the human world with toon characters living and interacting side-by-side with humans. The movie was released on Disney+ on May 20th, 2022, to mixed reviews, inspiring many memes and discussions online — notably for its crossovers such as Ugly Sonic.

History

On February 15th, 2022, the trailer for Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers was posted on the official Walt Disney Studios[1] YouTube channel, where it quickly went viral and gained over 3.4 million views in three months. The teaser trailer was also notable for showing off the many different cameos that would be present within the film's universe (shown below).

4chan Plot Leak

Shortly after the teaser trailer came out, a plot leak was posted to 4chan by an anonymous user claiming to have seen test screenings of the movie. The leak went on to state that Pluto was the toon behind everything and that they would be turned into a monstrosity that eventually gets defeated by the Rescue Rangers (shown below).

It's Pluto, mad at them for upstaging him in his own shorts so many times, and also p----- as hell at always being typecast as an animal (unlike Goofy) just because he's a quadruped. To that end he kidnaps Gadget, both to freak out Chip and Dale and to force her to rig up an advanced version of the CGI surgery machine that toons are using to upgrade themselves, so that he can upgrade himself into "The Ultimate Toon" using traits copied from a bunch of others he's been kidnapping, 2D and 3D. The funding for this project comes from a video piracy operation he's running, using the pseudonym "Mean Dean" (the "joke" being that he intends to make himself a walking copyright infringement). The movie ends with the machine going haywire, turning him into the Frankenstinian toon seen in the trailer, though not before he tests it on Chip and ends up swapping one of Chip's cute chipmunk ears for one of his own. He's defeated by being forced through the machine backwards (tail in the gears). He's last seen being driven to the Toontown Dog Pound by the Weasels. Yes, those Weasels. Their car looks like the one they drive in Roger Rabbit, except it's white and it's got "Toontown Pooch Patrol" on it. He talks, BTW. And the movie sucks in general. There's a completely forgettable human character called Ellie who's a Rescue-Rangers-obsessed fangirl-slash-rookie-detective who takes up half the movie and they are deliberately NOT showing her in the trailers because the people making them know people are sick of these franchise adaptations where a random human takes the spotlight at the expense of the original characters. Incidentally, Gadget is the only one who didn't get washed up. When she's kidnapped, it's off the set of an MCU movie where she's doubling for Scarlet Johannson in special-effects miniature shots - she doesn't get back into the old clothes until the end of the film, in most of her scenes she's wearing a tiny black "Black Widow" bodysuit.

On April 27th, 2022, a second trailer for the movie came out on YouTube[2] (shown below) that had the character which would later be known as "Sweet Pete" labeled as "Mean Dean," causing a lot of people to be sure that the 4chan leaks were accurate, resulting in some fans becoming upset at the movie before it even came out because they didn't like the way the plot sounded.

These fears ended up being unfounded, as (after the movie came out) the character Mean Dean (screenshot shown below) was called Sweet Pete and was the portrayed as the main villain of the movie, not Pluto or anyone else.

Online Presence

Upon the film's release on May 20th, 2022, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers received mixed reviews from critics and viewers alike, with a 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb,[3] an 81 percent on Rotten Tomatoes[4] and a 66 on Metacritic.[5]

Ugly Sonic

After the movie premiered, the main takeaway was the inclusion of Ugly Sonic, who is the original character design behind the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog film (seen below). The character's inclusion led to numerous jokes about internet hate, trying to start over a career and having other cartoon characters revulsed by him. This joke was particularly effective because the studio that was behind the original Ugly Sonic design, Moving Picture Company, was also the one who animated the Chip 'n Dale movie.

The thing that bothers me the most about this film isn't the whole Gadget x Zipper debacle, (still messed up / darkly-humorous) but that it's yet another "Look kids! Your favorite cartoon characters are all washed-up has-beens whom live in a depressing miserable existence! Aren't we so clever, subversive, meta and deconstructive?! " kind of story.

Why can't just let wholesome things be? Why everything has to be dark, gritty, cynical and bleak? Don't we have enough of that in the real world?
