About

My Little Pony: A New Generation is a CGI animated film based on the My Little Pony toy line released on Netflix on September 24th, 2021. It continues the story and events from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic several years in the future.

History

The earliest mention of the new generation was a leak that was reported on by the My Little Pony fan blog site Equestriadaily, named after the land in which the ponies live. The news piece[1] uses catalog listings from a company known for making officially licensed merch to show what the character designs for generation five allegedly look like. This news was also discussed on the YouTube channel Flutter525. The YouTube[2] video was posted on February 25th, 2021, and obtained 560,000 views in five months (shown below).

On June 30th, 2021, the official Netflix YouTube account posted a teaser video, this time showing who was voicing the ponies for the next generation of the show. The cast list has:

  • Vanessa Hudgens, of High School Musical, voicing Sunny Starscout
  • Kimiko Glenn, of Peni Parker fame, voicing Izzy Moonbow
  • James Marsden, of Sonic the Hedgehog, voicing Hitch Trailblazer
  • Sofia Carson, most known for Descendants, is voicing Pipp Petals
  • Liza Koshy, a known YouTuber, is voicing Zipp Storm

The video[3] reveal of the main cast with their pony character designs received 160,000 views in six days (shown below).

Reception

The reception was mostly warm to the new character designs and the cast. On Twitter, excitement over the premiere started to show in early July 2021, with Twitter[4] users such as @atlunazz tweeting how prepared they are for the event, which earned them 100 likes in five days (shown below).

Man… I almost wish Bronies would make a comeback. Know why I joined this site? To mock bronies! (Until I realized you can't do that)
Back in early 2010s the great threat to society was a bunch of goobers obsessing over a little girl's show.
I always told bronies "It will never last, it's just a big fad, it will get canceled one day."
And I was fucking right….
but now….

The great threat to society are actual Nazis and Marxists that are actually destroying property and killing people.

Just to think… how much better we be off if they did not exist but the Bronies still did.

At first I was skeptical that this wouldn't catch on as well as FIM did… but… now I'm convinced it won't.

It'll probably be successful with it's target audience but it just… looks so boring. Say what you will about flash, but gave the show a distinct artstyle and led to the characters having simpler, more recognizable, and downright iconic designs that most people could recognize with a single glance. This art direction feels way too safe and tame. I can't remember anything from the trailer other than the token guy horse and the unicorn with the smartphone, and I didn't remember them for good reasons.

I think it's a safe bet that the writing's going to be a lot more tame as well. While I didn't really watch Friendship is Magic, I still have a deep appreciation for the writers and artists behind it because it showed just how much could still be done with an animated show. One animated in flash no less. People put heart into it.

Also, being Netflix exclusive is probably the last nail in this reboot's coffin. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it'll catch us by surprise like it did last time, but I'm doubtful to say the least.
