Veteran and Gamer On Couch or I Defeated the Nazis in Holland refers to a comic by Michael de Adder in which an elderly war veteran, sitting on the couch with his grandson, says, "When I was your age, I defeated the Nazis in Holland" and the grandson, playing video games, responds, "On Xbox or PlayStation?" The comic was originally published in 2010 and became the subject of memes as early as 2015, largely as the subject of edits, in which the captions are altered to change the context of the original. Online, the comic is also largely considered an example of boomer humor.

Origin

On May 7th, 2010, Michael de Adder published a comic depicting an elderly war veteran sitting with his gamer grandson on a couch. The veteran says, "When I was your age, I defeated the Nazis in Holland" and the gamer grandson responds, "On Xbox or PlayStation." The comic was uploaded to Artizans^[1] with a watermark sometime after its publication (shown below).

On November 23rd, 2015, a screenshot of a repost of the comic to the War History Online Facebook page was posted to the subreddit /r/im14andthisisdeep,^[2] garnering over 900 upvotes in nine years, marking the earliest memetic use of the comic.

Spread

The comic became the further subject of memes and reposts over the following years. On June 22nd, 2019, it was reposted to the subreddit /r/boomershumor,^[3] garnering over 4,500 upvotes in five years.

On November 13th, a wholesome edit of the meme was posted on Reddit to /r/wholesomememes,^[4] garnering over 5,800 upvotes in the same span of time (shown below).

On November 14th, 2019, a version of the meme about Grammarly was posted to /r/okbuddyretard,^[5] garnering over 18,000 upvotes in five years (shown below). On February 12th, 2020, a version of the meme was posted by X^[6] user @barreirobust that gained over 450 likes in four years.

On August 25th, an edit of the wholesome version of the meme was posted to /r/memes^[7] with the Those Bastards Lied to Me meme attached to it, incorrectly suggesting the wholesome version was the true original, garnering over 40,000 upvotes in four years.

On September 15th, 2022, a version of the meme was posted to /r/nukedmemes^[8] in which the veteran answers "PC you fat retard" after the gamer asks "Xbox or PlayStation," garnering over 9,400 upvotes in two years (shown below).

On August 21st, 2024, X^[9] user @Harmful_Logic posted an edit of the meme in which the gamer asks, "jungle or tech house," the veteran answers, "Junglist massive," and the gamer responds, "class lad," garnering over 24,000 likes in two days (shown below).
