About
SheZow is an Australian-Candian animated children's cartoon whose pilot first aired as a Shorty McShorts' Short on the Disney Channel. The full series began airing on Network Ten in Australia in December 2012, later airing on the Hub Network in June 2013. The show follows 12-year-old Guy Hamdon after he inherits the superheroine SheZow's ring from his late Aunt Agnes, which transforms him into a female costumed crime-fighter every time he says, "You Go Girl!" The show aired for a season before it was discontinued, with discussions about the show in relation to trans rights continuing into the subsequent decade.
History
SheZow was created by Obie Scott Wade. The original five-minute pilot aired as part of the Disney Channel Shorty McShorts' Shorts on May 4th 2007 (shown below).[7]
The full show initially aired on Australia's Network Ten on December 15th 2012.[10] The show was later picked up by Hasbro's Hub Network, Debuting June 1st, 2013 12:30 pm ET [9]
The show follows 12-year-old Guy Hamdon after he inherits a ring from his late Aunt Agnes instead of his twin sister. Hamdon soon learns that the ring gives him superpowers by turning him into SheZow. Unfortunately for him, the ring was meant for a female superhero, meaning he had to dress up in a female superhero costume in order to fight crime.[1]
A total of 52 episodes were made [10] with the series creator expressing interest in making a second season in a 2013 interview [4]. However, a second season was never made, being canceled during the Hub Network's rebranding to Discovery Family. In a 2016 interview with series creator Obie Scott Wade, he claimed that the show was initially greenlit for a second season, but was told the network changed its mid a month later [9]. One edition of a SheZow comic was released in the year 2015.
Controversies
The show's gender-bending lead character led to some criticism from anti-LGBT+ supporters who thought the show would "confuse children about gender."[2] On May 28th, 2013, Ben Shapiro commented on the show in a Breitbart[3] article titled, "Children's Network Launches Transexual Superhero Show," saying, "Nothing says ‘child-appropriate material’ quite like gender-bending underage superheroes." The conservative group One Million Moms deemed the airing of the show as an "attempt by the gay, lesbian and transgender community to indoctrinate our children into accepting their lifestyles." [8]
However, the creator of the show Obie Scott Wade has denied that SheZow is a transgender allegory, saying, "SheZow is not transgendered" but is a boy whose gender "never changes" as he is trapped "in a silly costume."[4]
Bill Schultz, an animated producer on shows such as The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Ed, Edd, n' Eddy, and Courage the Cowardly Dog is quoted as saying on the controversy: "It is a cartoon. It is nothing more. This kind of gender-bending and cross-dressing is as old Milton Berle. But if the leadership of our country really wants to focus on this as an issue, it shows why there are so many problems facing our economy. Stop watching kid cartoons and get to work on important issues." [8]
