About

Courage the Cowardly Dog was an animated horror comedy TV series on Cartoon Network about a dog named Courage who has to protect his owners from monsters and other supernatural beings.

Plot

The show is about timid a dog named Courage who lives in a farmhouse with his owners Muriel and Eustace Bagge near Nowhere, Kansas. The three frequently face monsters, aliens, demons, zombies, and other supernatural beings.

History

The show made its debut on Cartoon Network on November 12th, 1999. The cartoon originated from a short from the animation series "What a Cartoon!" called "The Chicken from Outer Space". Due to the segment getting an Academy Award nomination in 1996, Cartoon Network commissioned a series based on the short. The series ran for 4 seasons with 52 episodes. The last episode aired on November 22, 2002. On October 31st, 2014, a Halloween special titled "The Fog of Courage" was aired in Cartoon Network South East Asia. The episode differs in that it was produced in CGI and has currently never been aired in the US[4].

Reception

The show received positive acclaim due its themes, atmosphere, and humor. The show was nominated for best sound editing three times in the Golden Reel Awards with the 2001 award being won. The show was also awarded in the 2000 Annie Awards for "Outstanding Individual Achievement for Production Design in an Animated Television Production". The show currently holds an 8.3 user rating on IMDb[1], an 8.7 user rating on Tv.com[2], and a 3 out of 5 star rating with an age recommendation of 10 or above from Common Sense Media[3].

Online Presence

Since its airing, the series has gained a significant following with posts and discussion sites such as 4Chan, Tumblr, and reddit [5][6][11]. Fanfiction currently has more than 230 fanfics regarding the series[7]. The Courage The Cowardly Dog Wiki currently holds 388 entries regarding the series as of April, 2015[9]. The series has also inspired a number of Youtube Poop videos[8].
