The Muffin Song, also know as Muffin Time, is a song by YouTuber and asdfmovie series creator Thomas "TomSka" Ridgewell. In 2018, the song gained popularity on TikTok and later appeared in meme remixes on Instagram and YouTube.

Origin

2014 Version

On October 25th, 2013, YouTuber TomSka posted the 7th installation of asdfmovie animated series (shown below, left). In one of the sketches featured in the video, a talking muffin expressed its desire to die by being consumed. The video was watched over 32 million times over 5 years.

On October 10th, 2014, TomSka posted the 8th part of the series, in which the muffin exclaims "It's muffin time!" and requests to be killed (shown below, right). The video gained over 30 million views within a 4-year period.



On November 4th, 2014, YouTuber RoomieOfficial posted a music remix "It's Muffin Time!" based on the TomSka's video. The video (shown below, left) was watched over 27 million times within 4 years. On July 31st, 2015, YouTuber Maxie used the remix in an animated video that gained over 8,5 million views within 3,5 years (shown below, right).



2018 Version

On May 11th, 2018, TomSka posted a music video titled "THE MUFFIN SONG (asdfmovie feat. Schmoyoho)". In the video, an anthropomorphic muffin performs a cheerful song about his desire to die. The video gained over 61 million views over a 7-month period.

TikTok Popularity

In mid-October 2018 TikTok creator @anne_b_official[1] uploaded a now-deleted video of herself dubbing over The Muffin Song. On October 27th, YouTuber ThisISclickBAIT reuploaded the video (shown below, left). On the same day, YouTube user BomMosVok uploaded a compilation of @anne_b_official videos titled "Weird Muffin time Girl and her other videos" (shown below, right).



Spread

On October 25th, 2018, TikTok user @stevenmckell[2] uploaded his own version of the dub. The post gained more than 151,700 likes within a two-month period.

The videos uploaded by @anne_b_official and @stevenmckell became popular choices for ironic duets among TikTok users. In November 2018, several such compilations were posted on YouTube.



In November 2018, the song began seeing use in video remixes on Instagram and YouTube. For example, on November 22nd, Instagram user xxmuffintime edited The Muffin Song over a recording of rapper 6ix9ine dancing (shown below, left). The post gained more than 1,000 likes within a month. On November 23rd, Instagram user spongebill_memes used the song in a meme remix (shown below, right).



On November 25th, 2018, YouTuber a vine posted a compilation of The Muffin Song memes.



I Baked You a Pie

In November 2018, TikTok user Jayden Croes (@jaydencroes)[3] posted a now-deleted sketch in which he and his brother Gilmher (@gilmhercroes) sang lines from another asdfmovie video over The Muffin Song melody. Following a wave of negative feedback, Croes deleted the video after 16 hours of it being posted. On November 22rd, 2018, YouTube user unfunny reuploaded the video.



Similar to its predecessor, the song became a popular choice for ironic duets.



I Baked You a Pie Remake

On March 12th, 2020, TikTok[4] user Jayden Croes (@jaydencroes) uploaded the remake of his November 2018 video. The video received over 26 million views and 3.8 million likes in five days (shown below, left). On March 15th, 2020, @jaydencroes[5] made a post explaining his and his brother's motivation behind the remake, with the post gaining over 8.6 million views and 1.1 million likes in two days (shown below, right).

In the following days, the remake was widely circulated online with reuploads on YouTube,[6] iFunny[7] and other platforms.
