Gru Holding a Gun, also known as Things Are About to Get GRUesome, is a reaction image macro series featuring the character Gru from Despicable Me holding a gun.
Origin
On March 18th, 2018 by iFunny] user clex (shown below) posted the original image of Gru combined with the Hand Pointing a Gun exploitable (shown below, left). The background is a final location from the 2017 video game Doki Doki Literature Club.
A little over one year later, on May 7th, 2019, Redditor [1] Cuntclitpussy posted an image of Gru with a gun and the caption "Things are about to get GRUesome." They wrote above the image, "Me: 'spells woord wrong.'" The post received more than 27,000 points (97% upvoted) and 300 comments (shown below, right).
Precursor
The image of Gru with a gun predates the post by possibly more than a year. The earliest known usage of the image was posted . The post received more than 200 points (100% upvoted).
Spread
Following the post, others used the image with the caption in other memes. On May 7th, Redditor[3] posted the image with the caption "*makes mother mistakes*." The post received more than 15,000 points (98% upvoted) and 60 comments (shown below, left).
