Video Game Songs With Lyrics or Adding Lyrics to Video Game Songs refers to videos and memes that give lyrics to popular instrumental or chiptune video game songs. Videos imagining lyrics for video game songs date back to as early as July 2008, with YouTuber Brentalfloss being the earliest known content creator to popularize the trend. Content adding lyrics to video game songs continued to appear online throughout the 2010s and 2020s, seeing a boost in interest on X / Twitter in June 2025.

Origin

On July 28th, 2008, YouTuber[1] Brentalfloss uploaded a video in which he sings made-up lyrics to the tune of Mega Man 3's theme song, garnering over 1.3 million views in 17 years. This is the earliest known example of a video that adds lyrics to a video game song without lyrics. Brentalfloss uploaded many more examples of these videos over the years, with a playlist on YouTube[2] containing over 90 examples related to the trend.



Spread

The trend continued to spread over the 2010s and 2020s. On August 3rd, 2010, YouTuber[3] FreddeGredde posted a video where he plays several video game songs on guitar and sings lyrics to them, garnering over 14 million views in 15 years. On June 2nd, 2011, YouTuber[4] Moxie's Komics posted a video adding lyrics to the invinsibility song from Super Mario Bros., garnering over 3.5 million views in 14 years.



On April 8th, 2016, YouTuber[5] PeanutButterGamer posted a video playing Super Mario Galaxy hacks, garnering over 6 million views in nine years. At the 8:55 timestampe, PeanutButterGamer sings a song to the lyrics of the game's track.



On November 19th, 2023, Tumblr[6] user seaslux made a post consisting of the Super Mario RPG song "Beware the Forest's Mushrooms" with lyrics underneath about Pikmin, garnering over 27,000 notes in two years. The song was sung by several social media users over the following months, including YouTuber[7] Gazing Shimmers on November 25th, 2023, garnering over 300,000 views in two years.



On June 25th, 2025, X[8] user @graetgalaxy posted, "What if videogame boss fight had lyrics: it is tiiiime to fiiiiight i will not back doooownnnn we will fiiiiiight," garnering over 34,000 likes in two days.
